A severe storm can produce flooding in neighborhoods that may cause water damage in homes. Families can be left with mushy carpet, dilapidated couches, and partially soaked boxes along with cherished items that need to be restored. When 3-8 inches of rain falls quickly, and flash flooding occurs in can cause thousands of dollars in damages in homes.
If you had a water damage you should begin the dry out & restoration process immediately — It is important to call a professional restoration company that has the equipment to completely dry-out your home. Water damage can sometimes be hidden behind drywall or beneath carpets that may even feel dry. A moisture meter detector is used to help determine where there is water damage. Insurance often covers most of the cost, and consumer shop vacs and dehumidifiers are not always effective. If you do not begin a dry-out within three days, secondary damage such as mold will begin to grow, which can be even more costly and may cause health effects to your family. Costs for drying out a basement can run from about $3,500 to $7,000 — and that does not cover the cost of repairing any damage or replacing lost items.
Beware of scammers. Calling a local and reputable restoration company is important. Do not use a contractor that not from the area. Do not use a storm chaser, they capitalize on weather disasters such as flooding, hail and windstorms. Storm chasers usually will go door to door to see if you need service and most likely have a high-pressure sales pitch or offers of “special” prices available only if you immediately agree to the deal.
Be prepared before the next flood by taking these few steps:
- Store items in plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes.
- Invest in a power supply for your simp pump or get a battery-powered back up pump.
- Review your insurance policy to make sure you have adequate coverage. A secondary policy is sometimes needed to cover sump pump failure. You also may need flood insurance to cover water that enters your home through windows or doors — as opposed to seeping in through the ground. You probably need at least $25,000 in coverage for a basement.
