Ten Tips for Fireworks and Fire Safety This 4th of July
It’s hard to believe it is July already and everyone will be celebrating after the year we just experienced. It is important to still be safe when cooking out and lighting off fireworks.
The crews at SERVPRO of West Akron would like to share a few holiday tips:
- Space for your Grill: Keep a 3-foot “safe zone” around your grill or campfire free from overhangs.
- Keep your grill clean after every use to prevent grease fires.
- After the coals have completely cooled, place your used coals in a metal can with a lid.
- Restrain from using fireworks and pyrotechnics not authorized for use in Ohio.
- Never use fireworks under or near dry or flammable structures or surfaces.
- Ensure that an adult is present during the lighting of fireworks and that spectators are a safe distance from the display area.
- Never alter or make your own fireworks or pyrotechnic displays.
- Have a bucket or water or hose ready to soak or douse any used or defective fireworks before of disposing them.
- As always, ensure that your home or property has a “defensible space” around your home free of weeds or dried plants to ensure that any home or yard fires do not spread onto your property.
- Call 9-1-1 as soon as you notice any unintended fire ignition or smoke.
A lot or this information may seem like common sense, but the estimated rate of fireworksrelated, emergency department-treated injuries in the United States is 3.1 per 100,000 individuals. Results from the 2019 Special Study of the 7,300 estimated fireworks-related injuries sustained, 66 percent were to males and 34 percent were to females. According to the Fireworks Annual Report published in June 2020.
