This time of year, we take the time to gather with family and friends to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. As you prepare this feast it is important to practice safe cooking habits, so your day of joy doesn’t turn into a day of a fire disaster. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the main cause of home fires and injuries, with the Thanksgiving holiday being the peak day for cooking-related fire emergencies. Below are a safety tips to enjoy a safe holiday.
- While cooking, never leave it unattended especially while deep frying, broiling or grilling. If you need to leave your home, you should turn everything off.
- Keep small children and animals away from stove or oven.
- Place all flammable materials like potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, towels and paper items away from burners.
- Do not wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while
- After each course, clean cooking surfaces to prevent grease build-up.
- Always have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and check your batteries in your smoke alarms.
- Double check all cooking appliances to make sure they are turned off before you leave your home or go to bed.
