Fire Safety Tips for homeowners in Akron, Ohio

It is very important to educate your family of fire safety and to have a plan of action. Home fires can start and spread quickly. Just a little bit of planning can make a big difference for your family. Here are a few tips:
- Check Your Smoke Alarms regularly to make sure they are still working properly. Change the batteries every year. Replace all smoke detectors after 10 years.
- Create and Practice a Fire Escape Plan. It is important to have two different escape plans out of every room. Teach your children to stay low and go because smoke is very toxic. Also, Practice feeling the door, doorknob and cracks around the door with the back of your hand to see if they are too hot and finally have a designated meeting place outside and away from the home.
- In an Emergency, Leave Home Immediately. If you are inside during a fire, leave immediately and then when you are safe outside call 911.
- If You’re Stuck Inside, Cover the Areas Where Smoke Might Come In. If you are unable to safely leave your home during a fire, cover your vents, doors and cracks around your door with blankets or towels to keep smoke out of your room then call 911.
- To prevent fires: Keep space heaters away from flammable materials, store gasoline in locked areas away from children, turn off any devices when you leave home, avoid over plugging several appliance cords into the same electrical socket, blow out candles, secure fireplaces with screens. When cooking make sure you don’t have anything flammable near cooking surfaces and have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
